The Media - Part 2

Often you hear those on the left complain about Conservative talk radio and Fox News (they call it "faux news"). They say that talk radio and Fox are the Conservative media, therefore it can't be trusted as it is biased.  

Firstly, Conservative talk radio is NOT a "news" service. The commentators do not pretend to be news providers. They are pundits. They are commenting on current events and sharing their opinions and are quite open about it.

Secondly, Fox News provides the exact same news that all the others do. The only difference with Fox is that it shows events from all angles. Fox also includes Conservative commentators in its programming. This sort of balances out all the crap. I rarely watch TV news (including Fox) unless there is something big going on. I watch a great deal of it while visiting Mom in Colorado. My opinion of Fox is not that it is left or right but that it is a little more balanced than all the others out there. I think we need some balance.

As for those on the Left who despise Fox and Talk Radio, I'll remind them on what they have (and have had for decades):

ABC, CBS, NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, CHN, PBS, NPR, Hollywood, 97% of all printed media.

The Media Part One

Ok, this is my take on contemporary media. I've been an avid news junkie for many years. Before fox, before the internet. I loved the 24 hour news cycle on CNN and kept my radio tuned in to the news stations (even PBS at the time).

I grew up on main stream media and accepted the fact that it was a bit biased, leaning to the left. That was general knowledge. Everyone knew it. We had to accept it as there was no other source. Conservatives had periodicals we could fall back on later after watching the nightly news. American Spectator and National Review come to mind.

Then came talk radio, specifically Rush Limbaugh in the 1980s. I remember driving across Iowa in 1988 on my way to Colorado from Pennsylvania. I was on military leave and eager to get home. Fiddling on the radio, I came upon an AM station where someone was mocking Animal Rights Activitist fretting over some crap and that was when I discovered Rush. It was hilarious! I was shocked because I could not believe someone was making fun of animal activists! I thought it must have been some local, gutsy, shock jock in Iowa. How could he get away with it?

The station started fading out and I actually pulled over at a rest stop on I35 so that I could keep listening. That's how unusual it was. Rush continued on with other issues at the time. This was wonderful. I didn't want him to stop. I had to get going and eventually the channel faded out.

 A radio commentator discussing current events with a humorous Conservative twist to it. It was unprecedented at the time. I coudn't wait to tell my Mom.

FINALLY!

Right. Four years of ignoring all the fun stuff I used to do on the net. I almost forgot I had this little blog. Finally, I am going to do some blogging. I'm in the right frame of mind for it. No one but me reads it so I guess I'm talking to myself. No matter. It's fun!
